Shafir is self-taught in the medium of mosaics. She always
knew, even as a young girl, that one day the road would lead her to this
destiny. Her mosaics are impressive in their vibrant use of color and have
an enormous impact on viewers who find them truly inspirational, providing
lasting hours of meditation and observation. Shafir is especially appreciated
for her pioneering works in what she terms the "spontaneous
mosaic," working directly on a piece without sketches or preconception.
This is a mysterious process, often starting with the inspiration of one
interesting stone or piece of broken pottery that she loves, that interests
her. It is almost unfathomable how the end result of symmetry and integrated
design is achieved in her often huge murals. Shafir's technique flows from
her belief that mosaics have their own rules, and an almost unique ability
to "think" in mosaics, always searching for and selecting-sometimes
for days-two pieces of material that "kiss." The choices are vast,
including natural stones, broken pottery, mosaic glass, found objects and
ceramic pieces which she design. When she finds these perfect mates, it
is like an epiphany, and she knows instantly and spontaneously that it is
right. Her glorious murals confirm this assessment.
