Winter 2011 Workshops

Making Ceramic Pieces for Mosaic
With Leah Zahavi

Description:
Here, at the Inner Piece Studio, we hold the belief that artists’ work starts with the materials they use. Most mosaic artists use commercial materials, yet they need not depend only on what they can buy or find. Instead, they can make their own materials and create their own “signature” tesserae that will enhance their work and bring it to the next level.

In this workshop, students will make ceramic tesserae and learn different decorating and glazing techniques. This is a two-day workshop, which will be held non-consecutively to allow time for the clay to dry before it is fired and glazed.

Day 1:
Students will work with wet clay, shape and mold it into mosaic pieces and decorate them with colored slips.

Day 2:
Students will return to the studio to apply glazes on their bisque-fired pieces.

Why take this workshop?

The ceramic workshop is not a prerequisite for the Spontaneous Mosaic workshop with Ilana Shafir, yet it is highly recommended. Those who take the workshop will end up with an exciting array of ceramic pieces to work with, and their mosaics will be more interesting, vivid, authentic, and innovative than mosaics that are made solely out of commercial supplies.

Winter 2011 Workshops

Spontaneous Mosaic with Ilana Shafir
